At 22:15 hours on Tuesday evening, the HFD was dispatched along with Ho-Ho-Kus EMS to Route 17 southbound to a report of an MVA. Arriving PD units confirmed a vehicle into a dump truck and advised of 2 victims injured and entrapped in the auto. State contractors had been performing road work and had the fast lane shut down when the auto was struck by a tractor trailer, lost control and spun around striking the parked dump truck rear-end first.
Engine 733's crew arrived quickly and immediately went to work stabilizing the vehicle and removing the roof to allow access to the 2 patients while Engine 731's crew de-energized the vehicle and stretched an 1 3/4" hand line as a precaution.
The extrication and removal of both patients was completed in less than 15 minutes and they were transported to the hospital by Ho-Ho-Kus EMS with moderate injuries. All units where cleared from the scene and returning after approximately one hour.
As always, great teamwork by HFD and Ho-Ho-Kus Ambulance personnel working together to quickly and safely assess, extricate and package the patients for transport!
